Several surveys and studies claim that television continues remains among the most influential and dominating forms of media in the world. The Internet’s capability and coverage is widespread, but so is television. The very popular and talked about primetime TV shows are also taking the world by storm today. Some of the most mentioned shows in this line today would be Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives, Chuck and Lost among the others. These primetime shows has influenced the way people think and behave. However, is it really safe to say that these shows indeed have some social relevance or significance?
But in trying to determine what the real social relevance these primetime TV programs have, it would be helpful to first determine how powerful such programs can get. In the United States for example, a lot of studies and surveys have suggested that the viewership of primetime TV shows have a wide range. From the young toddlers up to the elders, they all appear to watching different shows. This alone can tell something about how primetime TV can actually reach a lot of audience. Moreover, because of the growing open-mindedness and liberalism today, these primetime TV programs are coping with the growing unconventional minds and behavior of viewers. Thus more programs have become more aggressive, straight forward, and contain more controversial issues. Considering the reality that more young viewers are fond of watching these programs, it may get alarming and upsetting to think about possible effects of these uncensored messages and portrayals presented in such programs. Also, thinking that most censorship laws and policies remain questionable with regards to their effectiveness, it can be said that if not enough censorship and monitoring would be done in individual households, the behaviors of these young viewers would definitely be at risk of being negatively affected.
But despite all these, there still remain positive influences these programs present. Viewers can get several inspirational thoughts, and these can even affect emotions. Considering all these aforementioned claims and realities, it can be claimed that these primetime TV programs have a huge social impact, relevance and significance which people must never underestimate and overlook.
Television will always have a great influence on people, help shape public opinion. Because the public and the state should control the content in broadcasting. The process must be controlled.
ReplyDeleteHello I can not agree with Leslie, because the state can not control the content in broadcasting. What and when to look - a personal decision. If the state will intervene in personal life - this is totalitarianism.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think we should balance the role of government and ordinary people. Because, if the emphasis on state control, it is unacceptable in democratic states, and if it is all completely unchecked, then the information space filled with violence and immorality.
